Abstract:

BACKGROUND

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a viral dermatosis most common in children. There are a large number of methods for the treatment of MC; however, so far, effective non-invasive etiotropic agents for the treatment of this disease have not been developed.

OBJECTIVE

Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of MC therapy in children with a product for external use based on ammonium glycyrrhizinate.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study involved 24 patients aged 1 to 10 years with a verified diagnosis of MC, randomized into 2 groups. Patients of the 1st group (n=12) received monotherapy with a product based on ammonium glycyrrhizinate; patients of the 2nd group (n=12) at the first treatment stage, the largest MC element was removed mechanically, then the nearby destruction area (within a radius 5—10 cm), as well as other elements, the studied preparation was applied. The observation period was 12 weeks.

RESULTS

From 6th to 12th weeks from the start of therapy, all patients of both groups showed a stable regression of clinical and dermatoscopic manifestations of MC. Monotherapy using a product based on ammonium glycyrrhizinate had similar effectiveness in comparison with complex therapy included additional mechanical destruction of MC elements. During the study, no cases of MC autoinoculation were revealed; the tolerability of the study product was assessed by patients as very good.

CONCLUSION

The external treatment with agent based on ammonium glycyrrhizinate in children with MC has been shown to be clinical effective, well tolerated and safe.
