Abstract:

Tinea pedis and tinea unguium are important cross-cutting problems all over the world. The prevalence of tinea pedis and tinea unguium among the population of large cities suggests that they are «civilization-related diseases». This study is aimed at assessing the incidence and characteristics of onychomycosis in patients, who were hospitalized to the multidisciplinary hospital. The study was carried out at the multidisciplinary military hospital of the Defense Ministry of the Russian Federation. A total of 98 patients with tinea pedis and tinea unguium, who were hospitalized to various departments, have been examined during 6 months of 2016. Analysis of the literature and our own research show that the problem of tinea pedis has two important aspects. High incidence rate of tinea pedis and its interdisciplinary relevance to medicine in general are the face side of the problem. The flip side of the problem is that neither related medical specialists nor the patients themselves pay proper attention to tinea pedis. Timely detection of the disease at its early stage is one of the main preventive measures for tinea pedis and tinea unguium.
