The present review paper concerns the problem of diagnostics of pulmonary embolism and the causes leading to its development. Pulmonary embolism has for many years been a challenging problem. The timely diagnostics of this pathology encounters difficulties due to polymorphysm of its clinical manifestations. Laboratory, ultrasound, and radiodiagnostic techniques are used to reveal thromboembolism in the branches of the pulmonary artery. The results obtained by one of these methods are not infrequently ambiguous, their correct interpretation is possible only taking into consideration the clinical probability of pulmonary embolism in conjunction with the data obtained by combination of various techniques. The comprehensive X-ray study with the use of contrast agents appears to be the most efficacious tool for diagnostics of pulmonary embolism.
