BACKGROUND

Wandering spleen is a rare condition characterized by the absence of the spleen in its typical anatomical position, usually due to congenital or acquired laxity or absence of its suspensory ligaments. The present research database represents 536 cases of volvulus of the spleen within adults and kids/teens total. For adults, this is an extremely rare pathology, which occurs with a frequency of 0.1% — 0.2% in all splenectomies. Clinical manifestations are usually nonspecific and subtle, which complicates timely diagnosis. In urgent cases surgeons perform a major surgery — laparoscopy and splenectomy, both of which demonstrate a high risk of post-surgery complications and risks.

OBJECTIVE

The goal of this research is to demonstrate a new organ-preserving treatment method to treat a splenic volvulus.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Patient K., 22 years old, a professional dancer, was urgently hospitalized to the surgical department of City Clinical Hospital No. 29 named after N.E. Bauman. After examination, the diagnosis of splenic torsion was determined. The patient underwent laparoscopic detorsion of the spleen, retroperitonealization, and splenopexy.

RESULTS

The postoperative period was uneventful. The patient was discharged after 5 days.

CONCLUSION

Splenectomy carries a high risk of developing post-splenectomy sepsis, therefore the variant of organ-preserving surgery should be the most preferable, including in emergency situation
