OBJECTIVE

Comparative analysis of various treatment methods for non-parasitic liver abscesses, based on the developed original ultrasound classification.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The presented retrospective single-center study analyzed the treatment of 22 patients aged 27 to 80 years with non-parasitic liver abscesses of various localizations for the period from 2017 to 2022 in the Department of Abdominal Surgery and Polytrauma of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Gusak Institute of Emergency and Reconstructive Surgery” of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. The study included 4 groups of patients.

RESULTS

Percutaneous transhepatic drainage of the lesion under ultrasound navigation was performed in 9 patients (40.9% — group 1); laparoscopy, opening, and drainage of the abscess were performed in 6 patients (27.2% — group 2); abscess opening through laparotomy was performed in 2 patients (9% — group 3); 5 patients (22.9% — group 4) were treated conservatively. The selection criteria for each of the described methods are defined.

CONCLUSION

Despite numerous attempts to classify liver abscesses by clinical and radiological criteria, it is difficult to identify clearly determined algorithms of action at each stage. In some centers, treatment tactics are selected individually based on their own local experience.
