Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

Quality of life evaluation in patients with achalasia after peroral endoscopic myotomy according to SF-36, GIQLI questionnaires, and Eckardt score.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We performed endoscopic myotomy in 72 patients (27 men, 45 women, age range 15—72 years) between 2017 and 2021. The disease duration ranged from 6 months to 40 years. All patients were questioned using Eckardt score before intervention and after 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months, SF-36 and GIQLI before intervention and after 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.

RESULTS

Oral food intake was restored in all patients one month after the intervention, with positive dynamics in the main indicators of all questionnaires. A difference in Eckardt scores before and in all periods after surgery was noticed. According to the SF-36 questionnaire, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after operation all indicators, including the physical component of health and the psychological component of health, were significantly higher than indicators before the operation. According to the GIQLI questionnaire, one month after the operation all questionnaire indicators improved and remained after 3, 6, and 12 months.

CONCLUSION

The quality of life after peroral endoscopic myotomy in patients with achalasia, according to questionnaires was improved from the first month after intervention and remained at a high level for 12 months after. Further observations are required to assess the long-term results of the intervention.
