Since its foundation in 1974, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) has been for 50 years the most authoritative and largest professional association of clinicians and scientists researching a multidisciplinary approach to the problem of pain research and methods of its prevention and treatment. The second half of the 60s and early 70s of the last century were marked by a number of very important studies and discoveries that contributed to a greater understanding of the problem and attracting the attention of professionals and the public to it. The achievements of the IASP over a fifty-year period are impressive. 96 National Chapters and 4 Federations have been formed. 25 Special Interest Groups were organized for members interested in specific aspects of the pain problem. IASP is constantly working on taxonomy: improving definitions of basic terms, updating classifications of chronic pain, including descriptions of syndromes. The association has held 19 World Congresses. IASP has established numerous awards, prizes, grants, and scholarships for interns, researchers, and doctors, primarily from developing countries. In 2004, IASP initiated the first Global Year of Right to Pain Relief under the motto “Pain relief should be a human right”. Every year, the focus is on another aspect of pain. Thus, IASP has named 2024 the Global Year about Sex and Gender Disparities in Pain.
