Summary. This review presents basic information about white matter fiber tracts of the human brain, with a special emphasis being placed on long associative fibers (superior and inferior longitudinal fascicles , inferior frontooccipital fascicle, fasciculus arcuatus and fasciculus uncinatus): their structure, history, functions, methods of preoperative and intraoperative identification during neurosurgical operations. Neurological symptoms caused by a damage to each of the above-described long associative fibers are described. There is a detailed analysis of methods of neuropsychological testing and neurophysiological identification in white matter fiber tract mapping in focal brain lesions.
