Based on current literature sources and their findings, the authors consider clinical and pathophysiological correlations that are the essence of one of the most complex, less studied and therefore controversial female health problems - androgen deficiency in women. The role of estrogens and gestagens in the normal and developmental endocrinology of women has been exactly determined whereas that of male sex hormones in women remains a matter of research debate. The paper analyzes the available guidelines of the leading world, European, and Russian research communities on female androgen deficiency, in terms of which the authors give their viewpoint that the role of androgens in women's life should be reassessed in the context of above all gynecological and urological aspects of the problem, without having a claim on the comprehensive estimation of the implication of androgens in women. As shown by the world experience, transdermal gels are the safest and most effective androgen formulations for women. The paper considers the practical issues of pharmacotherapy for androgen deficiency in women in urogynecologic practice.
