Abstract:

Intervention on the nasal septum is one of the most frequently performed operations in ENT practice.

OBJECTIVE

Systematization and generalization of literature data on the prevalence of septoplasty complications.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Analysis of publications for the period 1998—2020 presented in the PubMed and RSCI databases. The search for sources was carried out according to the keywords: septoplasty, endoscopic septoplasty, septal deviation, complication.

RESULTS

The most common complications of nasal septum surgery are nasal bleeding, nasal synechiae and secondary deviation of the nasal septum. Various techniques are used to reduce the risk of postoperative complications among that the most common are tamponade of the nasal cavity, septal splints and septum sutures.

CONCLUSION

Currently, there is no evidence of the benefit of any particular septoplasty technique; however, minimal invasiveness and a proper visibility of the surgical area can reduce complications.
