Abstract:

The pathological changes of the inferior turbinated bones (INT) are responsible for a large number of cases of nasal breathing disturbance. The surgical procedures used for the treatment of this condition are ranked among the most common surgical interventions in the otorhinolaryngological practice. Computed tomography of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is not included in the standard list of preoperative examination of the patients presenting with the pathological changes of the inferior turbinated bones. At the same time, a large number of such changes including pathological pneumatization of the turbinated bones, osteoma, and intraosseous hemangioma can be detected only by visualizing the anatomical structures of the nasal cavity. The present article describes certain cases of the rare form of INT pathology, namely (the pathological bending of the inferior nasal turbinated bone and its fenestration by the spur of the nasal septum). The presented data confirm the need for spiral computed tomography of paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. Examinations with the application of this technique may help the doctor to choose the optimal strategy for the surgical intervention.
