According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.9 million people worldwide are overweight. Obesity is not only a proven dangerous disease but a predictor of developing various complications and other pathologies. This creates a serious load on the healthcare systems of different countries.
OBJECTIVE
To study and analyze the problems and prospects of medical care for obese patients based on a systematic review of publications.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A systematic method was utilized to find, select, and critically assess the relevant studies. The systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines using certain PICO(S) criteria.
RESULTS
Economic and social progress in the world has contributed to an exponential rise in obesity rates. Thus, in the Russian Federation, the obesity prevalence increased from 10.8 in 1993 to 27.9% in 2017 in men and 26.4 to 31.8% in women, respectively. Obesity results in the loss of health and economic issues such as healthcare expenses for treatment and prevention of obesity-related diseases, missing working days, and early incapacitation of the employable population. The detection of markers of early incapacitation in obesity can potentially become a reliable tool for a PHC practitioner dealing with this group of patients. Complex and efficient care for people with obesity requires the coordinated activity of the entire healthcare system and the development and improvement of the system of dispensary observation for this group of people.
CONCLUSION
Russian medical community has not finalized its approach to combating obesity. Detecting markers for developing complications and creating a new complex approach to medical care for patients with obesity is a promising mechanism for solving the problems of organizing medical care for such patients.
