Currently, attention is being increasingly focused on screening and prevention of hyperglycemia, since for many years, this condition not only precedes type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) but is also considered a risk factor (RF) of atherosclerosis-related cardiovascular diseases.

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the detectability of daytime hyperglycemia in patients with and without a history of noncommunicable diseases (NCD) and in patients with risk factors of NCD.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Preventive counseling was performed in shopping centers for 4.663 subjects. The counseling included questionnaires, anthropometry, and blood glucose and cholesterol tests.

RESULTS

Daytime hyperglycemia was detected in 40.6% of the subjects, and in 55.0% of them, it persisted even 2 hours after a meal. The incidence rate of hyperglycemia was not associated with gender but increased with age: from 18.8% in those under 20 years old to 47.8% in subjects over 60 years old. Hyperglycemia was reported in patients with type 2 DM (69.2%), hypertension (47.2%), and coronary heart disease (25.9%). In patients with a family history of diabetes and hypertension, pronounced hyperglycemia was observed in 11.1% of cases and 2.0-4.9% in patients with other NCD risk factors.

CONCLUSION

Assessment of daytime blood glucose can help timely detect hyperglycemia and contribute to the prevention of type 2 DM and cardiovascular diseases.
