The high prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles among adolescents puts them at high risk for somatic and reproductive health problems. To prioritize interventions to manage these risk factors, information on the quantitative evaluation and significance of different factors for the reproductive potential of female adolescents is needed.
OBJECTIVE
The objective is to quantify the impact of lifestyle components on the reproductive potential of female adolescents to provide the scientific rationale of measures to promote a healthy lifestyle.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
The study involved 490 female adolescents aged 14—15 and 16—17 years, students of educational institutions. Questionnaires were used to obtain characteristics of lifestyle, sexual behavior, and reproductive attitudes. The reproductive potential of female adolescents was assessed by the prevalence of somatic morbidity, the level of physical and sexual development, and gynecological morbidity. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the quantitative dependence and variability of reproductive potential depending on different groups of lifestyle factors.
RESULTS
Typical unhealthy lifestyles and reproductive behavior were observed, especially in 16 and 17-year female adolescents. More unfavorable characteristics of the reproductive potential of female adolescents of 16—17 years old due to higher somatic morbidity and inflammatory genital diseases were observed. Correlation of females reproductive potential with lifestyle components and reproductive behavior was established. Based on multiple regression analysis, statistically significant probability models of changes in reproductive potential were obtained for 14—15-year-old female adolescents as a function of daily regimen and diet (27.9% and 20.1%, respectively); for 16—17-year-olds as a function of day regimen, diet, and reproductive behavior (25.0%, 18.6%, 11.5%, respectively).
CONCLUSION
The reproductive potential of female adolescents aged 14—17 is determined by the daily regimen, nutritional characteristics, and behavioral factors, which should be considered when planning preventive measures.
