Abstract Chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCDs) are the leading cause of death globally. The risk of CNCDs is closely related to a person’s lifestyle and, above all, to behavioral risk factors (RFs). Correction of behavioral RFs is one of the important methods for substantially reducing mortality rates. Objective — to analyze the data available in the literature on the association of behavioral RFs with CNCDs. Material and methods. The authors sought and analyzed the literary sources available in the databases Pubmed, World Bank publications, WHO, Directory of Open Access Journals, Citefactor, eLibrary, and Cyberleninka. 175 publications were analyzed; the review included the largest studies and metaanalyses (n=73). Results. A number of epidemiological studies and large-scale metaanalyses made over the past 30 years have revealed that there is a clear association of behavioral RFs with CNCDs. Smoking makes an indisputable contribution to the risk of all the CNCDs presented in this review, while there is a clear dose-dependent association of the number of cigarettes smoked with the risk of both cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and a number of cancers. The reduction in the risk of CNCDs due to regular high- and moderate-intensity physical activities ranges from 23 to 75%. A number of studies have shown that the daily intake of fresh vegetables and fruits in amounts of 200–300 grams has a beneficial effect on the risk of CNCDs: the reduction in the risk of CVD, diabetes mellitus, and a number of cancers ranges from 8 to 39%. Conclusion. The given results showing the substantial contribution of the RFs under study to the incidence and mortality from CVD confirm the relevance of such studies.
