As economies develop, technology and other modern conveniences enable us to move less, making physical activity optional. As a direct result, childhood obesity, preventable diabetes and a whole host of other emotional and physical health disorders have never been more prevalent. In Russia, in half a generation, (1995-2011) physical activity has declined by 18%, and is projected to drop to 32% by 2030. In fact, current research indicates that this generation of children may live 5 years less than their parents. In acknowledgement of this, we worked with over 70 expert organizations in the field of physical activity to release a Framework for Action entitled Designed to Move (www.designedtomove.org).
