OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the use of compression sutures for the treatment of postpartum haemorrhage and compare the results with those reported in the literature.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Design is a retrospective study covering the period from January 2018 to May 2021. The study included 37 patients with massive postpartum bleeding, in whom conservative therapy did not have an effect, and therefore compression sutures were applied to the uterus. The main criterion for assessing the outcome of the case was considered successful treatment, prevention of hysterectomy.

RESULTS

The study included 37 patients with massive postpartum hemorrhage, in whom conservative therapy did not work, and therefore compression sutures were placed on the uterus. The effectiveness of hemostasis using only B-Lynch sutures was 66%, the efficiency of our original suture using our proposed suture system showed an efficiency of 70%; and the effectiveness of combining suturing with other surgical techniques of hemostasis was 74%.

CONCLUSION

Uterine compression sutures are an effective treatment for massive postpartum haemorrhage in approximately 70% of cases of massive postpartum haemorrhage. This technique can be used in conjunction with other interventions to improve the effectiveness of treatment to prevent hysterectomy.
