Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is a major public health problem today; according to the World Health Organization data, there are annually more than 1,500,000 new cancer cases and over 500,000 deaths. CRC occurs in the adenomatous polyp—carcinoma sequence in 80—90% of cases. Methods of screening for colorectal cancer, such as fecal occult blood test, flexible sigmoidoscopy, fibrocolonoscopy, double contrasting irrigoscopy, and their combination, are available in Russia. Particular attention is given to the relatively novel colorectal cancer screening option CT colonography (a noninvasive diagnostic method that significantly identifies clinically relevant colorectal masses). Its techniques, methods for preparing the large bowel to be examined, indications and contraindications, as well as interpretation of the findings were described.
