Objective — to define the place of radiofrequency thermal ablation (RTA) in the combined treatment of bilobar liver metastases from colorectal cancer (CRC). Subjects and methods. The investigation enrolled 178 patients with CRC after removal of primary colon tumor with solitary (n=2—3) and multiple (>3) bilobar liver metastases, who had been treated at the Samara Regional Clinical Oncology Dispensary in 2001 to 2011. The patients were divided into two groups according to treatment options. The patients in Group 1 received combined (chemotherapy + RTA) treatment and those in Group 2 had chemotherapy only. Results. The use of RTA in combination with chemotherapy to treat bilobar CRC metastases can significantly improve relapse-free and overall survival rates as compared to that of chemotherapy only. The investigation showed that overall 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were higher in Group 1 than in Group 2. In Group 1, RTA allowed 4.3% of the patients with solitary metastases and 1.8% of those with multiple metastases to achieve 5- and 4-year survivals, respectively; whereas in Group 2, 9.9 and 2.1% achieved only a 3-year survival.
