OBJECTIVE

To analyze the state of nephrology service in constituent entities of the Russian Federation in 2019—2020.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We assessed survey data of the chief external nephrologists of health authorities of constituent entities of the Russian Federation between December 2020 and November 2021. The questionnaire was aimed at identifying the problems in nephrology service in constituent entities of the Russian Federation as of 01/01/2020 and 01/01/2021.

RESULTS

The number of regions with available peritoneal dialysis service, kidney transplantation, nephrology center, Doppler ultrasound, angiography of kidney vessels and kidney biopsy increased by 8 (9%), 3 (3.5%), 8 (9%), 11 (13%), 10 (12%), 4 (5%) in 2020 compared to 2019, respectively. A staff shortage of outpatient nephrologists was noted by 38 (45%) chief external nephrologists. Training base for nephrologists is available only in 36 (42%) constituent entities of the Russian Federation. In 2020, the register of patients with chronic kidney disease was maintained in 51 (60%) subjects.

CONCLUSION

There was certain improvement in availability of nephrology care in many constituent entities of the Russian Federation in 2020 compared to 2019. Shortage of personnel, education of doctors, introduction of a register of patients with chronic kidney disease and funding issues are still important problems for nephrology service.
