The review is devoted to history of minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery, such as MIDCAB and MICS CABG. Attention is focused on key issues and criteria for selecting patients for CABG via anterolateral mini-thoracotomy. The advantages and disadvantages of minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery are analyzed in comparison with classical coronary artery bypass grafting and hybrid approach. The current issues of minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery and the ways for their solution are analyzed in detail. The authors conclude that MICS CABG is feasible and can make multi-vessel minimally invasive coronary surgery safe, effective and widely available in appropriate selection of patients, adequate equipment and sufficient surgical experience.
