Results of 55 autopsies divided into 3 groups were available for analysis. Group 1 (n=10) included subjects who died without visual signs of chronic venous diseases, group 2 (n=21) comprised patients with such signs (C4-C6), group 3 (n=24) patients who underwent subfascial ligature of compromised perforating veins in the Cockett zone (Linton's and Felder's operations). In all the cases, perforating veins of the medial group were counted. Three morphological types of perforants were distinguished based on the severity of sclerosis. Perforant neogenesis in group 3 was documented within 3 years after surgery. Histological study of neoperforants revealed sclerotic changes characteristic of chronic venous insufficiency.
