OBJECTIVE

To describe the course of the hormone-resistant form of Crohn’s disease, complicated by sepsis and gastrointestinal bleeding that required surgical intervention.

CASE REPORT

Inflammatory bowel diseases in adolescent patients often present with an atypical onset and a more severe progression, leading to frequent complications. The article describes a case of Crohn’s disease in a 17-year-old girl, complicated by gastrointestinal bleeding and pancytopenia. More aggressive therapy involving intestinal resection of the ileocecal angle was necessary given the history of hormone resistance and the concurrent Klebsiella sepsis.

CONCLUSION

The presented clinical case clearly demonstrates the severity of the disease in a teenager, as well as challenges involved in choosing conservative therapy.
