Rhinosinusitis is one of the most common diagnoses in ENT practice. However, there is still no consensus on the treatment of rhinosinusitis. In recent decades there has been a trend towards an increase in the number of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. At the same time, the place of methods for active drainage of the paranasal sinuses in the local therapy of rhinosinusitis has not been determined, and their effectiveness and feasibility remain questionable.
To conduct an analytical review of scientific publications on the use of nasal catheters for active drainage of the sinuses in acute and chronic rhinosinusitis
The publications (articles and corresponding abstracts) presented in the RSCI database, PubMed are analyzed. The choice of material was carried out according to the keywords: acute rhinosinusitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal catheters, active drainage.
The use of nasal catheters for active drainage of the paranasal sinuses provides a local effect which is extremely important given the global trend of combating the antibiotic resistance. The analysis of the reasons for the underestimation of the method is presented — the design flaws of the YAMIK catheter, the lack of methodologically correct scientific research devoted to assessing the effectiveness and safety of its use, shortcomings in the technique of performing the treatment procedure, the lack of measures aimed at teaching doctors the use of nasal catheters. The scientific literature data concerning the use of nasal catheters for active drainage of sinuses in acute and chronic rhinosinusitis were summarized.
