Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the most important regulators of key signaling pathways of many life support systems. In the human body, there is a cycle of NO, in which this molecule is oxidized to nitrite-ion (NO2–), then NO2– is oxidized to nitrate-ion (NO3–), and finally NO is reduced over from NO3– through NO2– via several enzymes. Due to important biological and physiological activities of all the components of this cycle, including being regulators of the cardiovascular system, this review addresses the role of the elements of the existing cycle in the regulation of the vital systems of the human body and predicting the risk of cardiovascular death. In the first part of the review, the properties of NO, the details of its synthesis, and the history of its discovery are discussed.
