MicroRNAs are short, non-coding RNAs with a length of 18—25 nucleotides that regulate about one third of the genome at the posttranscriptional level. Due to different types of transport, microRNAs can be detected in biological fluids, such as blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, or saliva. In addition, the circulating microRNA profile is a certain part of the cells in which they are modified and secreted in accordance with the physiological or pathological conditions of these cells. Therefore, microRNAs are considered as biomarkers of interest in many diseases. However, one can encounter several problems associated with substantial differences between the procedures of sample processing, the methods of analysis, and especially the strategies of result standardization. This review presents current knowledge of the use of circulating microRNAs as biomarkers in biological fluids, as well as the prospects arising from the fact that the vesicular fractions of circulating microRNAs can be employed to evaluate the state of cells and tissues, which synthesize them.
