Abstract:

The prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) was investigated in 1391 miners of main professional groups, such as mining withdrawal machinists (MWMs), underground mineworkers (UMs), mid-level pit managers (MLPMs), and underground electricians (UEs). The obtained indicators were comparatively analyzed with the Russian results of Stage 2 monitoring of the hypertension situation in the Russian Federation (2005-2007). The investigation showed the high prevalence of a number of CVRFs in the professional groups of miners: high alcohol abuse rates in MWMs and UEs, hypercholesterolemia in MWMs, UMs, and UEs; obesity in MLPMs, lower rates of hypertension in UMs and UEs. The high educational qualification of a professional group was shown to determine 15.4 and 7.8% reductions in the rates of smoking and alcohol abuse, respectively. Lifestyle is proposed to be modified as preventive methods in the workers. Low blood pressures are not assumed to regard as a positive phenomenon; additional investigations of the cardiovascular system should be performed in the miners who have left their profession, prematurely in particular, before reaching the retirement age.
