The range of diseases and conditions arising and/or triggered by tattooing is constantly expanding. We present a clinical case of granulomatous inflammation in the tattoo area and triggering of Mediterranean fever exacerbation (periodic fever) by tattooing.

OBJECTIVE

To describe a case of Mediterranean fever (periodic fever) and granulomatous inflammation related to tattooing

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Patient M., 30 years old, presented with complaints of abnormal tattoo appearance, burning and swelling in the area of black pigment insertion, as well as with signs and symptoms of familial Mediterranean fever after tattooing. Histological examination of the granulomatous inflammation site was performed.

RESULTS

Retrospectively, an exacerbation of familial Mediterranean fever related to tattooing was diagnosed. The examined sample of tattooed skin revealed granulomatous inflammation around a foreign body (black pigment). Despite complete epithelialization, fibrosis of all skin layers with histoarchitecture alteration and redistribution of microcirculatory blood vessels was observed.

CONCLUSION

The presented clinical case is an example of post-tattoo complications with systemic manifestation (exacerbation of familial Mediterranean fever) and a local complication of granulomatous inflammation around the foreign body (pigment).
