According to the WHO, the annual incidence of herpes is about 86 million people. Widespread occurrence, the problems in understanding the laws of development of latency and persistence of herpes viruses in humans, multiorgan nature of lesions, increased incidence of the recurrent forms of the disease, the ability of HSV to initiate the immunosuppression, and numerous complications emphasize the medical and social importance of the development of adequate treatment. Objective. This work is aimed at studying clinical efficacy, safety, and tolerability of Panavir in treatment of patients with herpetic infection. Material and methods. The study included 50 patients aged 21 to 50 years with various manifestations of herpes. Among the patients, there were 23 (46%) males and 27 (54%) females. The patients were divided into two groups. The first group included 10 (20%) patients with cutaneous and mucous membrane herpes simplex; the second one included 40 (80%) individuals with genital herpes. Later the basic group (n=20) and control group (n=20) were randomly formed of patients with moderate to severe disease. The diagnosis was verified based on the history, clinical and epidemiological studies, the results of enzyme-linked immunoassay, and polymerase chain reaction. The methods of treatment included administration of acyclic nucleosides and Panavir in the form of rectal suppositories and/or gel in one group of patients. The control group received only systemic acyclic nucleosides and topical treatment using the same regimens. Results. It was found that there was a significant reduction in the severity of intoxication syndrome, decreased duration of subjective symptoms, itching and burning, on the average by 0.4 days compared to the control group, which received acyclovir. Conclusion. The use of the combinations of antiviral drugs that have different mechanisms of action leads to increased antiviral effect and therefore Panavir can be recommend for prevention and management of the symptoms of herpes infection either as monotherapy or in combination with other drugs.
