This paper reviews the complex interaction between chronic deficit of magnesium and risk of different diseases and its complications. Causes of magnesium deficit and its consequences are discussed. Contemporary methods of diagnoses of magnesium with specific invasive tests are also reviewed. The role of magnesium deficit in the development of coronary heart disease and dangerous heart arrhythmias is mentioned in the article. New data about the relations between polypharmacotherapy in the elderly and risk of magnesium deficit. Role of alcoholism in the development of such complication is also discussed. Influence of magnesium supplementation on blood pressure is also mentioned. As for the treatment of magnesium deficit the review emphasizes the role of orotate magnesium.
