OBJECTIVE

To assess the role of undifferentiated connective tissue dysplasia (UCTD) in recurrence of acute superficial thrombophlebitis in patients with varicose veins.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A prospective cohort study included 132 patients with varicose veins of the lower extremities. All patients underwent crossectomy for acute superficial thrombophlebitis and high risk of femoral vein thrombosis. We analyzed the incidence of recurrent superficial thrombophlebitis. Phenotypic signs were assessed to identify UCTD. The main group consisted of 67 patients with UCTD, the control group — 65 patients without UCTD. The endpoint was recurrent superficial thrombophlebitis within 36 months after surgery. Examination and ultrasound were carried out after 3, 6, 12 and 36 months. Patients with recurrent thrombophlebitis underwent examination immediately after manifestation of disease. Cox regression analysis was used to assess the effect of UCTD on the risk of recurrent superficial thrombophlebitis.

RESULTS

Recurrent superficial thrombophlebitis was detected in 27 (20.5%) patients including 22 (32.8%) ones with UCTD and 5 (7.7%) ones without UCTD (p=0.002) within 36 months. Multiple regression analysis confirmed UCTD as an independent risk factor of recurrent superficial thrombophlebitis in patients with varicose veins (hazard ratio 4.216; 95% CI 1.595-11.147).

CONCLUSION

UCTD is a risk factor of recurrent superficial thrombophlebitis in patients with varicose veins. UCTD in women with superficial thrombophlebitis after previous crossectomy increases the risk of recurrent thrombophlebitis by more than 4.2 times.
