Abstract:

The present review of the literature was designed to present information on the specific anatomical features of pelvic veins, venous outflow from the small pelvis, anatomical relationships between the pelvic and superficial veins of the perineum and lower extremities, the causes of the formation of pelvio-perineal reflux, the methods of radiation diagnosis, and the approaches to the correction of this pathological condition. Information on the possibilities of ultrasound diagnostics and X-ray tests for detecting pathological reflux from intrapelvic veins to superficial veins of the external genitalia, perineum and lower limbs, as well as the indications for conducting a diagnostic test is presented. The ambiguous attitude of different authors toward the application of phlebography for all the patients with varicose veins of the perineum and vulva veins is discussed. The effectiveness of surgery, sclerotherapy, and pharmacotherapy as the methods for the treatment of pelvio-perineal reflux is estimated. There are conflicting data on the appropriateness of endovascular embolization of gonadal veins, tributaries of internal iliac veins in the patients presenting with pelvio-perineal reflux.
