The frequency of venous thromboembolism (VTE), including fatal pulmonary embolism in the last decade has increased. Nevertheless, there are good examples of what results can be achieved if the existing clinical guidelines are scrupulously followed. In our country, such example was the project of the Russian Society of Surgeons and the Russian Phlebological Association «Safety Zone project». The first wave of the project implemented in 2009—2011 involved 53,596 patients from 59 surgical hospitals in our country, with an overall hospital mortality due to pulmonary embolism (PE) of 0.03%. In the second phase (2012—2013), not only surgical but also therapeutic departments participate. Data were obtained for 80 797 patients of surgical and therapeutic profiles. Overall hospital mortality due to pulmonary embolism was 0.046% from 0.21% of surgical and medical patients. 80 multidisciplinary hospitals (765 departments) participated in the third phase (2014—2015). The data on 93 137 patients of surgical, therapeutic, cardiac, neurological, obstetrics, oncology, intensive care departments were collected. Among the participants of the third wave of the project, VTE was reported in 390 (0.42%) patients and fatal pulmonary embolism in 19 (0.02%) patients. Thanks to «Safety Zone project» national health care now has its own unique experience targeted at the prevention of VTE in 227 530 patients from nearly 200 hospitals in various fields in all regions of the Russian Federation.
