Features of the inflammatory process in the gastric mucosa with bacterial and viral co-infection

OBJECTIVE

To determine the features of chronic inflammation in the gastric mucosa when infected with Helicobacter pylori and herpes viruses.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The study included 122 patients aged 25—57 years with chronic erosive gastritis, of which 52 were men and 70 were women.

RESULTS

In patients with chronic erosive gastritis associated with Helicobacter pylori, Epstein-Barr virus in the gastric mucosa worsened the course of the disease, increased the severity of inflammation and atrophy.

CONCLUSIONS

Epstein-Barr virus in the gastric mucosa promotes more frequent colonization by Helicobacter pylori strains, with a high degree of colonization being more common. In the diagnostic algorithm for chronic erosive gastritis, it would be advisable to include the biopsy examination not only for Helicobacter pylori but also herpes virus using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
