There is a preponderance of women older than 50 years among acromegalic patients. In the acromegalic women in this period of life, hypertrophic and hyperplastic processes in the reproductive target organs are more common and metabolic disturbances are more marked. The paper reviews the literature on the effect of estrogens on the secretion of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 in postmenopausal healthy and acromegalic women. It describes a new mechanism involved in the regulatory control of the level of steroid hormones (estrogens) on the secretion of GH and cytokines with the participation of a pathway consisting of Janus kinase, a signal protein, - a transducer and activator of transcription. High mortality and early disability, which are characteristic of acromegaly, are decreased to the average statistical levels during adequate treatment for the underlying disease. On this basis, it is important to timely diagnose and treat this disease with effective methods. Unfortunately, traditional treatment options do not always result in remission and one has to resort to alternative therapy. The review gives currently available alternative drugs (estrogens, selective estrogen receptor modulators) to treat therapy-resistant acromegaly by conventional methods.
