The results of surgical correction of genital prolapse were retrospectively analyzed and the rate of complications and long-term results after vaginal and laparoscopic accesses was compiled. The investigation enrolled 2 patient groups: 1) 421 patients who had undergone vaginal extraperitoneal colpopexy; 2) 540 patients who had laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy. All the patients were divided by the type of evolving complications: mesh- and surgery-associated ones. Based on the findings, the authors have arrived at the conclusion that the laparoscopic access applied to correct genital prolapse is relatively safe since the rate of mesh-associated and –unassociated complications due to this intervention is much lower than that due to vaginal extraperitoneal colpopexy.
