Vascularized flaps are effective in cases with a high risk of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leak. In pediatric practice, the use of this type of graft for plastics of skull base defects remains a controversial issue.

OBJECTIVE

To analyze the literature on the efficacy and safety of the use of a nasoseptal flap for plastics of skull base defects in pediatric practice.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Search for articles in the PubMed and EMBASE databases on the use of nasoseptal flap for plasty of skull base defects in children from 2006 to 2021. Articles were searched by keywords: skull base defect, skull base surgery, nasoseptal flap, meningoencephalocele, nasal liquorrhea.

RESULTS

10 studies were found, according to which 251 pediatric patients with skull base pathology requiring plasty of the skull base defect were operated on. In 120 (47.8%) cases, free grafts were used, and in 131 (52.2%) cases, a nasoseptal flap was used. The efficiency of plastic surgery using a nasoseptal flap was 81.7—100%, while using free grafts 88.1—88.5%. Complications are represented by atrophic rhinitis in 3 cases.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of a nasoseptal flap for plasty of skull base defects in pediatric practice is a safe and effective method. When using this plastic material, signs of atrophic rhinitis may appear, which requires effective prevention, the issues of which have not been developed at present.
