OBJECTIVE

Study of the bleeding sources’ localization in the posterior parts of the nasal cavity and the effectiveness of electrocoagulation in recurrent nasal bleeding (NB) from this area.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

530 patients with NB at the age from 22 to 84 years were examined. Recurrent NB were observed in 54 (10.2%) of 530 patients.

RESULTS

Among 54 patients with recurrent NB during endoscopic examination the source of bleeding was identified and coagulated in 32 patients; in 22 (40.7%) cases no bleeding vessel was found. Most often the bleeding vessel is localized in the posterior inferior part of the nasal cavity (inferior turbinate, inferior nasal meatus, Woodruff venous plexus under the posterior end of the inferior turbinate).

CONCLUSION

Effective hemostasis using electrocoagulation when a source of bleeding is detected is achieved in 100% of cases.
