Abstract:

Background. There are contradictions in the historical assessment of the views of scientists and physicians of the past on the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses. Objective: to acquaint readers with the results of analyzing the extant works of ancient and Byzantine scholars, 15th-to-19th century anatomists, who studied the structure of the paranasal sinuses. Main points. The available evidence suggests that Hippocrates was first to describe the ethmoidal labyrinth in the literature. There are no mentions of the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses in the extant writings of Hippocrates; there is no evidence to suggest that Hippocrates was the first to describe the frontal sinus. Conclusion. The existence of the paranasal sinuses, except the ethmoidal labyrinth, did not affect ancient medical theories or arouse interest among physicians of those times.
