OBJECTIVE

To study the correlation of certain blood proteins with presence of atherosclerotic plaques in patients with coronary atherosclerosis.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study included patients with coronary heart disease and coronary atherosclerosis (n=40) with mean age 57.95±7.22 year. Study material was blood serum. Protein concentration in serum samples was determined by PeptiQuant Plus Proteomics Kit («Cambridge Isotope Laboratories», the USA) sets. Protein fractions were identified by the multiple reaction monitoring method on Q-TRAP 6500 («AB Sciex Pte. Ltd.», the USA) mass spectrometer, combined with liquid chromatograph.

RESULTS

Decreased concentration of blood proteins, specifically ceruloplasmin, hemopexin, haptoglobin, afamin, complement components (C3, C7, C9) and complement factor B in blood serum were revealed in patients with instable atherosclerotic plaques by mass-spectrometric identification method. At the same time, increased concentration of attractin protein and complement factor H was found. The differences were considered significant at p<0.05. It was found, that instability of atherosclerotic plaques is associated with concentration of afamin, attractin, complement components, hemopexin and haptoglobin proteins.

CONCLUSION

Results of our study showed the correlation of afamin, attractin, complement components (C3, C7, C9), hemopexin and haptoglobin with instability of atherosclerotic plaques in coronary atherosclerosis. Their potential role in development of this disease and the possibility of using the examined proteins as biomarkers of atherosclerotic plaques instability should be studied further.
