Vitamin B12 deficiency is common both worldwide and in Russia. The diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency is challenging and requires the clinician to take a comprehensive approach to analyze clinical and laboratory data. However, given the lack of high specificity and sensitivity of laboratory techniques for determining the level of vitamin B12 in the real world, vitamin B12 deficiency can be determined only by the presence of symptoms and risk factors predisposing to the deficiency (identification of risk groups). To prevent severe consequences of vitamin B12 deficiency (some of them are irreversible), it is necessary to identify timely patients at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency and take appropriate preventive measures, which, according to modern concepts, may include taking high-dose oral formulations of vitamin B12.
