The current state of non-drug prevention of vestibular disorders in vestibular migraine indicates the need for further research.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
To study the possibilities of correcting the vestibular component in patients with vestibular migraine using the prophylactic effect of a ketogenic diet.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
The study included 46 patients (10 men and 36 women) aged 18 to 50 years with vestibular migraine who used a ketogenic diet for 3 months. The control group included 46 patients with vestibular migraine without modification of their routine dietary preferences. The study was conducted on the basis of the Smolensk State Medical University. The Vertigo Assessment Scale, the 5-point Vertigo Subjective Assessment Scale, and the Vestibular Questionnaire were used to determine the quality of life of patients.
RESULTS
Positive dynamics was revealed in all patients who used the ketogenic diet when analyzing the data of the physical, functional and emotional subscales of the Vertigo Rating Scale, the Subjective Vertigo Severity Rating Scale, and the Vestibular Questionnaire. A decrease in the intensity of vestibular dysfunction, a decrease in the number of days with dizziness and an improvement in the quality of life in patients with vestibular migraine after a ketogenic diet were found. The median indicator of quality of life deficiency in patients before the use of the ketogenic diet was 59 (95% CI 53.3—67.8) and after — 37 (95% CI 31.7—45.6). The change in quality of life indicators affected physical and emotional discomfort in equal proportions.
CONCLUSION
The ketogenic diet can be considered as a topical prophylactic non-pharmacological method for correcting vestibular dysfunction in patients with vestibular migraine.
