Alcohol consumption substantially affects chronic non-communicable disease (CNCD) mortality rates in Russia. Objective — to study mortality rates in regions with different alcohol consumption levels. Material and methods. A medical statistical study of standardized mortality rates (SMR) from major CNCDs was conducted according to the alcohol situation assessed using the authors’ integral alcohol situation index (IASI). Results and discussion. The regions with unfavorable and favorable situations showed substantial differences in mortality rate from diseases of the digestive organs: the pancreas, liver, and peptic ulcer by 1.8-, 1.7-, and 1.6-fold, respectively. The mortality rate from malignant neoplasms of the digestive system and from cardiovascular diseases in the regions with varying situations differed by 1.3-fold. The group differences in the SMR from breast neoplasms rates were insignificant. The significance of differences was significant (p<0.001) and was confirmed by single-factor analysis of variance. Conclusion. There was a relationship between the nature of the alcohol situation and mortality rates from some CNCDs that can be used as indirect indicators of alcohol problems in the regions. It is noted that the alcohol situation index consistently characterizes the acuteness of alcohol problems at the regional level and can be used to plan and assess preventive programs.
