Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To assess the level of cancer awareness in the population in terms of age.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The study consisted of 3 stages: expert, sociological, and analytical. At the expert stage, a group of oncologists formed to determine the spectrum and significance of questions for screening assessment of cancer awareness in the population. A sociological survey (1000 respondents) was then conducted in medical organizations of the Ivanovo region. The analytical stage involved statistical data processing to calculate the cancer awareness index.

RESULTS

Expert assessment identified 15 questions necessary for forming cancer awareness in the population, divided into 3 echelons based on their significance for different age groups. It was found that two-thirds of patients have insufficient cancer awareness.

CONCLUSIONS

The obtained data can be used to develop a complex of managing cancer awareness in the population and plan medical information activities.
