Prurigo in adults is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by paroxysmal skin rashes like papulovesicle, intensive and devastating itching. Disease pathophysiology has not been fully studied, while the resistance to the traditional therapy is increasing, that underlines the necessity of further research to study various treatment methods of this dermatosis. The review of domestic and foreign researches about the use of systemic and external therapy of prurigo in adults is presented. In particular, current treatment of prurigo in adults is conducted with antihistamines, topical steroids, calcineurin inhibitors, photo and biological therapy. The literature data about efficacy and safety of various medicines’ use in therapy of this dermatosis, including possibility of target therapy with the consideration of skin damage severity, are shown. A great number of pathogenetic mechanisms causing prurigo indicates that only one treatment method is insufficient. The multimodal therapy of prurigo in adults, including systemic and external treatment, should be used to achieve optimal results, long-term clinical remission and improve life quality of patients. The further targeted search of safe and effective methods for comprehensive treatment of this disease is necessary.
