Chronic skin itching is an urgent problem of our time, which is at the junction of several medical areas, because the cause of itching may be not only dermatological pathology, but also a fairly large number of systemic disorders. Chronic skin itching is most often observed in patients with hepatobiliary system dysfunction, in chronic kidney diseases, as well as in malignant neoplasms. In diseases of the hepatobiliary system, accompanied by cholestasis of various genesis, skin itching worries more than 56% of patients. Up to 84% of patients with chronic kidney disease also complain about generalized itching. Pathogenetically, itching in these patients is caused by immune system dysfunction and increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, but there are other hypotheses of itching. In malignant neoplasms there is also chronic itching, which can be caused by both immune processes and the use of drugs. Prescription of antihistamines for the treatment of skin itching in such patients is often impossible, and therefore the use of moisturizers is considered rational. It is important to note that in the described somatic pathologies, skin itching is often accompanied by severe xerosis and the prescription of adequate moisturizing agents significantly improves the quality of life of patients. Of undoubted interest in such cases are cosmetics containing ectoin, because, in addition to moisturizing effect, they have anti-inflammatory effect and can restore the barrier function of the skin.
