Occupational factors that increase the risk of developing cutaneous lymphomas

Cutaneous lymphomas are a group of diseases resulting from oncogenic mutations and emergence of a clone of malignant lymphocytes. The increasing anthropogenic impact on the human body and influence of many potentially dangerous ecogenetic biotropic environmental factors determine researchers' concern with occupational hazards. The literature data show that there are a variety of occupational factors increasing the risk of developing cutaneous lymphomas. Products containing aromatic and/or halogenated hydrocarbons, chromium salts, silica and pesticides are the most significant among them. High risk of morbidity was observed in glassblowers, potters, employees at the manufacture of ceramic products, pulp and paper production, trade, as well as in persons working with animals. There is some relation between the development of lymphomas and electric or magnetic field exposure. The negative impact of insecticides, solvents, and hair dyes is also suspected. We cannot exclude the negative impact of meat. Further study of the effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation is currently required. Data discussed in this review demonstrate the need for large-scale implementation of preventive measures.
