Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

To identify predictors of acute limb ischemia (ALI) in patients with the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) pneumonia.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Our study included 136 patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Patients of the main group (n=18) had ALI caused by arterial thrombosis, patients of the control group (n=118) did not have this complication. We analyzed age of patients, features of comorbidities, characteristics of peripheral artery disease, severity of COVID-19, clinical outcomes and combinations of arterial and venous thrombosis. Laboratory biomarkers, coagulation panel and complete blood count were also evaluated.

RESULTS

Severe course of COVID-19 is essential in acute limb ischemia. There were associations between lung lesions CT grade 3-4 and ALI. Predisposing laboratory biomarkers for thrombotic complications were high serum D-dimer, C-reactive protein and ferritin.

CONCLUSION

Acute limb ischemia is common in severe course of COVID-19. This complication occurs on the background of preexisting cardiovascular pathology, metabolic disorders and venous thrombotic events.
