The authors reconstruct the history of endovascular prevention of pulmonary embolism (PE) in Russia and analyze the role of the department of faculty-based surgery No. 1 and the University’s Surgical Hospital (Saveliev head V.S. between 1967 and 2013) of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University. Archival documents, personal archives of the staff and departmental laboratory of intracardiac and endovascular diagnostics are introduced into scientific environment for the first time. The authors discuss the evolution of global and local methods of surgical prevention of PE. Foundational contributions to development of this surgical direction by V.S. Saveliev, E.G. Yablokov, V.I. Prokubovsky, S.M. Kolodiy and many others are demonstrated. Thanks to these ones, the department of faculty-based surgery No. 1 with the University’s Surgical Hospital becomes a leading scientific, practical and methodological center in Russia and the world in surgical prevention of PE.
