Abstract:

OBJECTIVE

We evaluated the potential side effects, recurrence, and optimal method of the cold snare polypectomy of colon neoplasms with a diameter of ≤1.6 cm.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The retrospective study included the results of 385 patients who underwent polypectomy of at least one lesion ≤1.6 cm in size between September 2020 and January 2022 by cold snare. The age of the patients was 19—81 years (men — 138, women — 247); the age average of patients was 59.9±10.4 years.

RESULTS

704 epithelial lesions in 385 patients were removed by cold snare polypectomy. Most removed lesions were up to 6—7 mm in size (575—81.68% of excisions); cold snare polypectomy for 44 patients ≥10 mm was performed in 6.25% of cases. The number of simultaneously removed neoplasms varied from 1 to 12. In 48.75% of patients (187), one epithelial lesion was removed. Neoplasms were removed as a single block in 378 cases (98.18%) without the need for submucosal injection, which was necessary in 27 patients (7.01%). Complications during interventions occurred in 5 (1.3%) patients: bleeding after removal in 3 (0.78%), delayed bleeding in 1 (0.26%), and perforation upon removal in 1 (0.26%). All complications were treated with endoscopy. Neoplasms recurred in 7 (1.82%) patients.

CONCLUSION

Cold snare polypectomy in patients with colon epithelial lesions is a highly effective, safe, and relatively relapse-free method that can be successfully used as a technique for removing polypoid neoplasia ≤1.6 cm in size.
